MASON CITY — Ramona Dianne Edwards, 87, of Mason City, moved to her heavenly home on Friday, August 28, 2026, leaving behind a family that will remember her as a deeply loving, generous and selfless woman whose home and heart were always open to others.
A graveside service will be held at a future date at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. Funeral arrangements and the service date will be announced when they are finalized.
Ramona was born March 24, 1939, in Mason City, the daughter of Mariano and Virginia (Bartell) Mayo. The youngest in her family, she was raised in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School.
Following graduation, Ramona married Arlyn “Tuppy” Edwards on August 25, 1956, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. The couple made their home in Mason City and became parents to Rick and Dianne.
Ramona devoted many years to being a stay-at-home mother while her children were young, but her care for children extended well beyond her immediate family. After three nieces and a nephew lost both of their parents at a young age, Ramona opened her home and helped provide the love, guidance and stability they needed.
That willingness to care for others became one of the defining qualities of her life.
When Ramona later entered the workforce, she spent 20 years as a receptionist at Park Clinic. After the clinic closed, she worked as a supervisor in commercial cleaning for ServiceMaster and later Kimco Facility Services.
Family remained at the center of Ramona’s life. She treasured time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and especially enjoyed having everyone gathered together.
Anyone who walked into Ramona’s home was likely to be offered something to eat. Her family especially remembers her potato soup, which became one of those familiar family favorites tied closely to memories of home.
Ramona was known for a warm heart and generous spirit. She gave freely to others without expecting anything in return, and her kindness extended far beyond members of her own family.
She also knew how to enjoy the quieter moments of life. Ramona could often be found with a Diet Coke nearby while working on a word-search puzzle, playing cards, watching her favorite game shows or playing video games — sometimes well into the night and early morning hours.
Ramona is survived by her children, Rick (Christie) Edwards and Dianne Edwards Hufstedler; nieces and nephew Victoria “Tory” (Curtis) Buss, Virginia “Ginny” (David) Shunkwiler, Victor Calhoun and Vivian Bottema, whom she helped care for; grandchildren Rachel, Max, Emma, Brandon, Moriah, Crystal, Tiffany, Miranda, Jennifer and Jason; and great-grandchildren Jessie, Myra, Ezra, Tucker, Carter, Brayden, Joseph, Myles, Kahliah, Adeleigh, Emery, Alden, Lydia and Hazel.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Ramona was preceded in death by Arlyn “Tuppy” Edwards; her parents, Mariano and Virginia Mayo; and her siblings, Orlin, Robert, Marlyn and Marian Calhoun.
Her final resting place will be Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
