Walter John Schmitt, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025, at the age of 97 in Mason City, Iowa. Born on September 3, 1927, in Dubuque, Iowa, Walter’s life was a testament to his kind and gentle nature, which touched the lives of all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 am, Monday February 3, 2025 at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City, IA 50401. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Walter will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
Walter’s early years in Dubuque laid the foundation for a life of dedication and hard work. After graduating from high school, he embraced further education through college courses and self-study, which enabled him to pass the architectural exams. His professional life was spent with distinction at Wallace & Holland. Even after his official retirement in 1997, Walter’s passion for architecture led him to continue taking on contract work.
A patriot at heart, Walter was drafted into the United States Army and honorably served his country during two significant periods of the 20th century, World War II and the Korean Conflict. His service to the nation was a source of great pride for Walter and his family.
Walter was a member at the First Congregational Church in Mason City and the Builders Exchange. An avid outdoorsman, Walter shared a special bond with his son over their mutual love for bow hunting.
Walter’s life was enriched by his beloved wife, Donna; sons, John and Eric. His legacy continued to grow with his grandchildren, Alex, Abby, Garrett, Amy, and Kayla, and further blossomed with the joy of 12 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Marie; and sisters, Dorothy and Neoma.
