
MASON CITY – Nathan Burchett of Mason City competed in the 6th annual World Amateur Highland Heavy Games Championship September 8th and 9th at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and came back with the World Amateur Title.
Highland game competitions have been a staple at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and are a combination of modern strength training and ancient gaming practice. The Highland Heavy Games Championships bring in competitors from across the world to compete for the chance to claim the World Amateur Championship title.
The competition is a series consisting of nine different events that include the 22 lb Stone of Strength, 16 lb Stone of Strength, 56 lb Weight Throw, 28 lb Wright Throw, Caber Toss, Heavy Hammer Throw, Light Hammer Throw, and the 56 lb Weight for Height.
Along with the title of World Amateur Champion this is also considered a top opportunity to earn professional status in the sport.
There will be a celebration for the new champion Tuesday September 18th at Roller City from 6-9 with pizza and refreshments. Event is open to the public.
