MASON CITY — A registered sex offender placed in Mason City after prior court and correctional proceedings was jailed Friday night on a new sex offender registry violation charge, adding another chapter to a record that includes a conviction involving obscene material shown to a young girl and a prior registry violation.

Daniel Steven Coffee, 43, was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail at 6:42 p.m. on June 12, 2026, according to jail records.

Coffee (pictured at top) is charged with sex offender registration requirement violation, second offense, under Iowa Code section 692A.104. Jail records list bond at $5,000 cash only.

Although Coffee is now listed at a Mason City address, court and registry records show his underlying sex offense conviction came out of Hamilton County, and a later registry violation case came out of Webster County. His Mason City connection appears tied to correctional placement and registration after prior criminal proceedings, not long-standing local roots.

According to the Iowa Sex Offender Registry, Coffee is listed as a Tier 1 sex offender registrant with annual update requirements. The registry lists his current address as 818 15th Street SW in Mason City, with that address registered on August 8, 2025.

The registry lists Coffee’s underlying conviction as dissemination and exhibition of obscene material to minors. The conviction date listed is June 11, 2020, in Hamilton County.

Coffee was listed as 36 years old at the time of the offense. The registry identifies the victim category as a female child age 0 to 13 and states no weapon was used.

Iowa court records in Hamilton County case FECR341551 show Coffee was originally charged with lascivious acts with a child — solicitation, a Class D felony, and dissemination and exhibition of obscene material to minors, a serious misdemeanor. The charges stemmed from an offense date of January 1, 2017.

Court records show the felony lascivious acts charge was later dismissed by the court.

Coffee entered a negotiated guilty plea on June 11, 2020, to dissemination and exhibition of obscene material to minors, a serious misdemeanor. Judge Derek J. Johnson sentenced Coffee to 365 days in jail, with 335 days suspended, and placed him on two years of probation with the Department of Corrections.

The sentence also included a $315 fine, DNA requirement and a 10-year sex offender program requirement.

Court records show Coffee later violated probation in the Hamilton County case. He was adjudicated guilty of the probation violation on September 8, 2021, and was sentenced to a residential facility.

Financial records in the Hamilton County case show Coffee was assessed $1,110.98 in costs, fines, surcharges and other amounts. Records show $503.31 has been paid, leaving $607.67 still due.

Coffee also has a prior conviction for violating Iowa’s sex offender registry requirements.

Court records in Webster County case AGCR361294 show Coffee was charged with sex offender registration violation, first offense, an aggravated misdemeanor, after a June 11, 2020, offense. He entered a negotiated guilty plea on May 13, 2021.

Judge Joseph L. Tofilon sentenced Coffee to a two-year prison term, but the prison sentence was suspended. Coffee was placed on probation for two years. The sentence also included an $855 fine, which was suspended, and a DNA requirement.

Court records in the Webster County case also show a later probation-related count with an offense date of November 17, 2022. Coffee entered a negotiated guilty plea on May 16, 2023, to contempt of court for insolent behavior before the court and was sentenced to 18 days in jail. Prior court orders were continued.

Coffee’s presence in Mason City also previously surfaced in a 2025 Cerro Gordo County case involving an alleged voluntary absence from custody.

Court records show Coffee was charged in Cerro Gordo County in 2025 with voluntary absence from custody, a serious misdemeanor, after an alleged September 30, 2025, offense. That case was filed by Mason City police.

The charge appeared to involve Coffee’s custody status at the Beje Clark Residential Center, commonly known as the Beje Clark halfway house, in Mason City. However, court records show the case was dismissed by the court on October 28, 2025.

A dismissed charge is not a conviction.

The new June 12 arrest places Coffee back in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a fresh registry-related allegation tied to his sex offender status. For Mason City residents, the case raises renewed questions about how offenders from other Iowa counties are placed, monitored and supervised after correctional release or residential placement in the community.

No additional details about the alleged registry violation were included in the initial jail information provided.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation. Coffee is presumed innocent on the new charge unless and until proven guilty in court.
