HOUSTON, TEXAS — UNI Panther volleyball ran into one of the nation’s toughest teams Sunday, and No. 5 Louisville used a dominant blocking performance to sweep Northern Iowa in the Panthers’ final match of the Rice Invitational.
Louisville defeated UNI 25-11, 25-17 and 25-23 at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The loss capped a difficult weekend against elite competition for Northern Iowa, which had already pushed No. 15 Creighton before falling in four sets in the tournament opener.
Louisville seized control almost immediately Sunday.
The Cardinals opened the first set with an 8-0 run and repeatedly frustrated UNI at the net. Northern Iowa committed eight attack errors and was blocked five times in the opening frame, finishing with just nine kills and a .026 hitting percentage.
Cassidy Hartman led UNI with three kills in the first set, while Isabelle Elliott and Lily Dykstra each added two.
Louisville cruised to a 25-11 victory.
Northern Iowa steadied itself considerably in the second set.
The Panthers recorded 13 kills while hitting .290 and briefly moved in front 9-8 when Grace Hannam and Dykstra combined for UNI’s first block of the match.
Louisville answered with a 12-4 run to take command at 20-13 and went on to win the set 25-17.
Hartman and Dykstra each recorded five kills in the frame.
UNI then gave the fifth-ranked Cardinals their toughest fight of the afternoon in the third.
The teams battled through eight ties in the first 16 points before the Panthers eventually opened an 18-15 advantage on a service ace by Jadyn Petersen.
Northern Iowa couldn’t finish the upset bid.
Louisville rallied late and closed the match on a 4-0 run, escaping with a 25-23 victory to complete the sweep.
Hartman finished with a match-high 13 kills and added nine digs. It was her third match this season with at least 10 kills and the 37th double-digit kill performance of her UNI career.
Dykstra finished with 12 kills, giving her four double-digit kill matches this season and 30 for her career.
The two have carried a large share of Northern Iowa’s offense during the early season. Hartman recently delivered a career-high 31 kills and reached the 1,000-kill milestone during a five-set battle at South Dakota.
Maryn Bixby and Elliott added four kills apiece against Louisville.
Setter Reese Booth continued her strong start with 24 assists and 13 digs for another double-double.
Booth has now recorded a double-double in four consecutive matches. Sunday’s performance was her seventh of the season and 19th of her career, and she also surpassed 1,600 career assists.
Petersen finished with 11 digs, while Hannam recorded two blocks.
Northern Iowa hit .161 as a team and finished with 37 kills.
Sunday’s defeat dropped UNI to 4-4 all-time against Louisville. The Cardinals have won the last four meetings between the programs.
The Panthers now return to Cedar Falls for their long-awaited home opening weekend.
UNI will host Wichita State on Friday, September 18, at 6 p.m. inside the McLeod Center, followed by another matchup with the Shockers on Saturday.
