EVANSTON, ILL. — The second-ranked Iowa Hawkeye field hockey team erased a fourth-quarter deficit with two penalty-corner goals Friday, rallying past No. 16 Miami (Ohio), 2-1, at Lakeside Field in the Midwest Challenge.
The comeback kept Iowa unbeaten at 5-0 and marked the Hawkeyes’ third come-from-behind victory of the young season.
Miami struck first at the 26:54 mark when Toto Scarlatti redirected a pass toward the crease and found the net, giving the RedHawks a 1-0 advantage they carried deep into the fourth quarter.
Iowa finally broke through at 50:51. Téa Fortpied converted a penalty corner, with Reine van Hoof and Amber Millard-Smith picking up the assists, to tie the game at 1-1.
The Hawkeyes needed just over four more minutes to seize control.
Dionne van Aalsum delivered the game-winner at 54:56, scoring her eighth goal of the season off assists from Rachel Herbine and Fréderique van Cleef to put Iowa ahead 2-1.
Van Aalsum is now just three goals away from fifth place on Iowa’s all-time career goals list.
Goalkeeper Abby Johnson made two saves and picked up her fifth win of the season.
The victory continued an impressive opening stretch for Iowa. The Hawkeyes recently hammered Ball State 8-0 behind a pair of hat tricks, after also crushing Lehigh 9-0 as head coach Lisa Cellucci earned her 150th career victory.
Friday’s win improved Iowa to 13-1 all-time against Miami.
The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday, September 13, when they face No. 14 Louisville at 11 a.m. in Evanston. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
