Sandra Lou Hugo was born February 24, 1941, in Kossuth County, Iowa, to Henry and Josephine Gerdis. Known to many as Sandy, she graduated from Titonka High School and went on to build a long life rooted in family, faith and the Woden community.
Sandy married Fred Hugo, Jr. on February 17, 1958, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together, they made their lifelong home in Woden, where they raised their family and became part of the daily life of the community.
Across the years, Sandy cared for others in quiet and lasting ways. She provided childcare in her home, helping watch over children and families in the area. She also served for several years as the librarian in Woden, a fitting role for someone who loved books and learning.
Sandy was an avid reader, with a special interest in literature about World War II history. She also enjoyed baking and was active in First Presbyterian Church in Woden.
Her life was marked by family devotion, community service and the small, steady acts of care that leave a lasting mark on a town.
Sandy is survived by her daughters, Kathy Brown and her husband, Cary, of Woden, and Susan Hull and her husband, Jeffrey, of Woden; four grandchildren, Heather Clark and her husband, James, Rachel Brown, Sheric Hull and Skyler Hull; five great-grandchildren; sisters Jacki Van Hove and Charleen Raber; and many nieces and nephews.
