Iowa man gets fine and two days in jail for throwing wife to the ground

ORANGE CITY - An Iowa woman suffered several injuries after thrown to the ground by her husband, and now he must pay a fine and serve a short jail sentence.

ORANGE CITY – An Iowa woman suffered several injuries after thrown to the ground by her husband, and now he must pay a fine and serve a short jail sentence.

Thomas Kunstle, as Sioux County Attorney for Sioux County, Iowa announced that Joseph Richard Roth (pictured at top), 42, of Orange City, Iowa, was sentenced February 16, 2024 in Sioux County District Associate Court for the crime of Domestic Abuse Assault, First Offense, Causing Bodily Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor. Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle prosecuted the case on behalf of the State of Iowa.

This case arose on December 21, 2023, when the Orange City Police Department responded to a report of a domestic altercation in Alton. Their investigation revealed Roth had pulled his wife out of her vehicle and threw her to the ground. The victim received abrasions to her left elbow, left knee, and left upper thigh.

On February 15, 2024, Roth pled guilty to Domestic Abuse Assault, First Offense, Causing Bodily Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor, and was ordered to serve 180 days in the Sioux County Jail, with all but two-days suspended. Roth was further ordered to a term of probation with the Department of Corrections, pay multiple criminal fines, and successfully complete the Iowa Domestic Abuse Program.

The No Contact Order previously protecting the victim was extended the maximum term of five years.
