CHARLES CITY — Floyd County Medical Center is set for a major expansion and renovation after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a $27.5 million loan to modernize the Charles City hospital.

USDA Rural Development Iowa State Director Mike Sexton announced Friday, June 12, 2026, that the agency is loaning the money to Floyd County Medical Center to help expand and renovate the rural healthcare facility.

The project will include construction of a one-story addition, renovation of most of the hospital’s north wing, and expansion and modernization of the surgical, dietary and material management departments.

Once completed, USDA officials said the project is expected to improve the quality of care, modernize the hospital and provide more space for healthcare providers and patients in the Charles City area.

“Access to critical care is essential to the health of Iowans,” Sexton said. “President Donald Trump and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins have made it a priority to ensure rural Iowa communities have the resources needed to thrive, and this project helps achieve that vision.”

For Charles City and surrounding communities, the investment is significant because rural hospitals often serve as both medical anchors and economic anchors. Floyd County Medical Center provides care close to home for residents who otherwise may need to travel to larger regional medical centers for services.

Hospital renovation projects can also help rural facilities remain competitive in recruiting and retaining physicians, nurses, surgeons, technicians and support staff. Modernized surgical and support departments can improve patient flow, increase efficiency and help hospitals meet modern healthcare standards.

The investment comes at a time when many rural hospitals across the country face pressure from aging buildings, workforce shortages, rising costs and changing patient needs. For smaller communities, keeping a hospital strong is often tied directly to local quality of life, emergency response capacity and long-term community growth.

USDA is administering the funding through Rural Development’s Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant program.

USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities programs provide direct loans, loan guarantees and grants to develop or improve essential public services and facilities in rural communities. The programs are used to support projects such as hospitals, clinics, public safety facilities, schools, libraries and other community infrastructure.

USDA officials said investments like the Floyd County Medical Center project are intended to strengthen critical infrastructure, improve quality of life and help rural communities attract and retain businesses and services.

Floyd County Medical Center is located in Charles City and serves patients in Floyd County and the surrounding North Iowa region.
