FAYETTE — James “Jim” David Maurer, 82, of Fayette, died Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center.
Friends may greet the family from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton. No burial or interment information was announced in the funeral home’s obituary.
Born April 9, 1944, in West Union, Jim was the oldest child of E.W. “Lefty” and Gladys Maurer. He studied farm management at Iowa State University before entering the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1967. He married Linda Risse in 1969, and the couple raised four children while building a life centered on family, farming and livestock.
Cattle became one of the defining interests of Jim’s life. From showing Shorthorn cattle and sheep as a youngster to later raising Angus cattle through Movin-On Angus south of Lawler, he spent decades involved in livestock shows and the cattle community. The Maurer family traveled to county fairs, the Iowa State Fair and national shows, earning numerous honors along the way, including recognition for a National Champion Carcass Steer at the National Junior Angus Show in Wisconsin.
Jim also shared his livestock knowledge with younger generations while serving as a 4-H Beef Superintendent. He especially enjoyed seeing his children and grandchildren continue the family cattle tradition. Even in retirement, he remained involved on the farm, helping with fencing, pastures and cattle whenever he could.
Away from the farm, Jim enjoyed watching Turkey Valley football, cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes and settling in for a Western on television. He worked for Sara Lee in New Hampton and later for Upper Iowa University, retiring in 2018.
Jim is survived by his children, Brent Maurer, Trent Maurer and wife Myssi, Jennifer Maurer, and William Maurer and wife Heather; eight grandchildren, Kalista, Brandan, Chelbie, Riesse, Connor, Samuel Latim, Lyndin and Quinnlyn; four great-grandchildren, Bauer, Josephine, Monroe and Malcolm; and his siblings, Gary Maurer and wife Nancy, Karla Sprague and husband Chuck, and Dwight Maurer and wife Kathy. He was preceded in death by his parents.
