MASON CITY – A Mason City man has been jailed on felony burglary and other charges after a violent car crash and shooting incident early this morning.
On June 5, 2020, at about 12:21 AM, officers responded to the area of 1st and N Tennessee Ave. Multiple 911 callers reported a man had crashed his car into a house and was now armed with a gun.
When officers arrived, they found an unoccupied red Chevy Lumina registered to Zachary Baker-Ostrand had crashed into the east side of 1046 1st St NE. The Lumina damaged the east side of the house as well as the vehicle parked in the driveway.
Baker-Ostrand called 911and reported he was involved in a collision. He requested an ambulance. Officers and Mason City Fire Medics were dispatched to the intersection of 2nd and N. Tennessee Ave. Here they found Baker-Ostrand complaining of multiple injuries. He was transported to Mercy One.
Officers continued to investigate the incident and discovered that Baker-Ostrand had an altercation with the residents of 22 N Tennessee. Baker-Ostrand tried to run over one of the occupants with his vehicle. Baker-Ostrand then crashed his car into the house across the street.
At this point, Baker-Ostrand armed himself with a BB gun he had with him. He started shooting at 22 N Tennessee Ave. He walked up to the front of the house and shot out the front door window. After doing so, he kicked in the door and threatened the occupants. He then fled the scene before officers arrived.
After being treated and released for minor injuries, Zachary Baker-Ostrand (19) of Mason City was arrested and charged with Burglary 1st Degree, a class B Felony. Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, an Aggravated Misdemeanor, Reckless Driving, a Simple Misdemeanor, and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability, a Simple Misdemeanor.
