Gov. Reynolds signs “compromise legislation” to push felon voting constitutional amendment forward; crooks still have to complete sentences and pay restitution

Iowa capitol

DES MOINES – Gov. Kim Reynolds signed Senate File 2348, implementing legislation for HJR 14, a constitutional amendment that would restore felon voting rights upon discharge after completion of their sentences.

“By balancing the rights of victims and the importance of redemption, we can move forward with historic change for voting rights in Iowa,” said Gov. Reynolds. “This legislation allows us to implement our proposed constitutional amendment restoring the voting rights of Iowans who have completed serving their sentence. The right to vote is the cornerstone of being a part of any society, and I am proud of the broad coalition supporting this amendment.”

Iowa is the only state in the nation where all convicted felons lose their right to vote unless they apply to the Governor for restoration. In 2019 and again in 2020, Governor Reynolds called for a constitutional amendment to address this issue permanently.

S.F. 2348: an Act relating to the restoration of voting rights to certain convicted persons and including effective dare provisions.

Convicted persons must still complete any term of confinement, parole, and probation, and complete any special sentence imposed and pay all restitution to any victims.

So, their disbanding the Minneapolis police department now. And all this talk about defunding police departments all over the US. Is defunding even a word. So the brakes were put on and a lot of people lost their shirts. Now no mo money for police.

This poll tax has already been found to be unconstitutional in Florida.

If iowa had the death penalty this wouldn’t be an issue.

Before they are allowed to vote, the state needs to make sure that all the terms are met. I also think that they should all be working a legal job to qualify to vote. Dead beats, tit suckers, drug dealers need not apply.

This should make the old man on the north end proud of the Governor.

It should make you proud of the Governor too. I feel convicted felons deserve a second chance and should have voting rights restored. BUT…only if they have meet all of their court ordered requirements. So, if you want to vote, run for public office etc. do your part, make good on your obligations and the state should make you whole again.

Makes me very proud!!
Come on Buzz, you have been around NIT long enough to know who the old guy on the north end is and the fact that he would be pissed at the governor’s decision. My post was made sarcastically at him……
