CARTER LAKE, IOWA – What began as a disturbance at a Nebraska fast-food restaurant has unraveled into a multi-state homicide investigation spanning from Lincoln to the Iowa border. The chain of events began at approximately 9:47 p.m. on April 28, 2026, when Lincoln police officers responded to a call at a local eatery and encountered 37-year-old Joseph Edward Bertolino of Jacksonville, Florida. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in Bertolino’s arrest for attempted first-degree assault on a police officer. He is currently being held without bond in Lancaster County, Nebraska.

While in custody, Bertolino reportedly made “concerning statements” to investigators regarding an incident that had occurred earlier that evening at the Country Inn and Suites in Carter Lake, Iowa. The Lincoln Police Department immediately notified Iowa authorities of the allegations. Around the same time, a witness contacted the Carter Lake Police Department independently to request a welfare check on a male subject staying at the hotel located at 2210 Abbott Drive.

Upon arriving at the Country Inn and Suites, officers discovered a deceased male inside a hotel room. The discovery prompted Carter Lake officials to contact the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for forensic and investigative assistance. While the victim’s name is being withheld pending positive identification and the notification of next of kin, an autopsy has been scheduled at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner for April 30, 2026.

The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities work to piece together the timeline between the events in Iowa and Bertolino’s eventual arrest in Nebraska. While Bertolino (pictured at top) remains behind bars in Lincoln on the assault charge, criminal charges in Iowa are currently pending the results of the autopsy and the ongoing DCI investigation. Officials have stated that no further details are being released at this time to protect the integrity of the case.

On April 30, 2026, the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified the deceased male as 63-year-old Kenneth Bruce Gauff of Omaha, Nebraska. The manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

On April 30, 2026, Joseph Edward Bertolino was charged with Murder in the First Degree, a class A Felony.

Bertolino is currently in custody in Lancaster County, Nebraska for Attempted First Degree Assault on a Police Officer, stemming from an assault in Lincoln on April 28, 2026. On May 1, 2026, Bertolino appeared in court and waived extradition. He will be transported to Iowa to face his murder charge.
