WASHINGTON, D.C. – Iowa Congressman Steve King was roundly slammed for suggesting rape and incest bolster population.

King made the remarks in Urbandale and the remarks were caught on video posted by the Des Moines Register.

Iowa Democratic Party First Vice Chair Andrea Phillips released the following statement in response to Steve King’s latest comments:

“Steve King’s words rarely reflect Iowa values, but today he demonstrated once again how out of touch he is with our state. I don’t expect him to think about how his cruel rhetoric affects survivors and women seeking family planning resources in his district. I don’t expect him to change his ways, and that’s why democrats are organizing in every county to bring new leadership for Iowans and send him packing in 2020.”

J.D. Scholten, King’s possible Democratic opponent in the 2020 House District 4 election said: “Yet again, Steve King puts his selfish, hateful ideology above the needs of the people of Iowa’s 4th district. Excusing violence — in any way — is entirely unacceptable. Here in Iowa, we stand strong together in the face of violence, and strive to create a welcoming and safe community for all people. His comments are disrespectful to survivors and don’t reflect Iowan values. We stand for bringing all people together and fighting for the positive change that we desperately need here in Iowa.”

Many politicians and pundits called for King to resign from Congress, where he holds no committee memberships after earlier remarks about white supremacy.
