Democrats push voting on Iowa bus tour

Rod Boshart, CR Gazette –

DES MOINES – Democrats boarded a bus Tuesday to make a final statewide sweep to close the deal for President Obama with Iowa voters and to implore them to cast their ballots early.

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer said America has gone “from the brink” of economic disaster in September 2008 when Lehman Brothers “went broke” and much of the economy teetered toward financial depression to a situation where manufacturing jobs are coming back, farmers are getting $7 a bushel for corn and $15 a bushel for soybeans, and demand for U.S. permits to drill new oil and gas wells is quadrupling and creating waiting lists.

“This is the best it’s ever been in farm country,” he said.

“This president has led America out of the abyss and we’re now on the move,” Schweitzer said outside the Iowa Capitol building at Tuesday’s launch of the “Gotta Vote” bus tour sponsored by the Democratic National Committee and Obama for America campaign. “Times have never been brighter. We have a lot more work to do, but President Obama has led us from the brink and we are on the move again.”

The event was one of many by both political parties to rally supporters and get them to turn out to the polls between now and Election Day next Tuesday.

“Iowa will decide this election,” Schweitzer boldly predicted. “So goes Iowa, so goes America. Iowa picked Obama first and they’ll pick him again.”

He was joined on the bus tour by former Iowa Lt. Gov. Patty Judge of Albia and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, who is DNC vice chairman.

Judge said Democrats feel good about the presidential race and are confident of victory, but she added “we know it’s going to be close and every vote counts.” She said she did not want to see a repeat of 2000 when former Vice President Al Gore narrowly lost the presidential election to Republican George W. Bush.

Rybak said the president is in Washington “fighting the disaster” created by Hurricane Sandy but “his heart is here in Iowa.” He said Iowans understand Obama is someone they can trust to “look you in the eye and tell you a straight shot” versus the position changes his Republican rival Mitt Romney has made as former Massachusetts governor and GOP presidential candidate.

“People in Iowa know a lot about windmills, but they’ve never seen anyone twist in the wind like Mitt Romney,” Rybak said. “He’s been promising big change but he’s been delivering constant change.”
