HAMPTON — Hallard “Hal” Bumgarner, 72, of Hampton, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
Hal was born May 1, 1954, in Des Moines. As an infant, he was adopted at eight months old by his loving parents, Wayne and Irene, beginning a life that would eventually become deeply connected to the land and agricultural community of North Iowa.
Farming became an important part of Hal’s life around Hampton. His involvement in agriculture extended beyond simply working the ground, as he took part in efforts aimed at learning more about farming practices and sharing that knowledge with others.
Hal and Georgia Bumgarner were among the early North Iowa cooperators with Practical Farmers of Iowa, participating during a period when farmers were experimenting with ways to raise crops efficiently while reducing unnecessary inputs.
In 1988, Hal and Georgia helped host a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day near Hampton. Their farm work included demonstrations examining reduced nitrogen rates in corn as participating farmers tested agricultural practices under real-world field conditions.
The Bumgarners continued their involvement the following year, again participating with other farmers interested in crop trials, weed control, fertilizer use and other agricultural practices.
Those years offer a glimpse of Hal’s willingness to learn, experiment and share what was happening on his own acres with others in the farming community.
Hal’s connection to Hampton agriculture endured for decades, giving his life a strong tie to the farms, fields and people of Franklin County.
