VERMILLION, SD — Northern Iowa spread the damage across its lineup Friday afternoon, pounding out 46 kills and stuffing Utah Valley at the net as the Panthers rolled to a straight-set victory over the defending Western Athletic Conference champions.
UNI defeated the Wolverines 25-20, 25-21 and 25-17 in its second match of the 2026 South Dakota Classic at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
Five Panthers recorded at least five kills, while Isabelle Elliott, Cassidy Hartman and Lily Dykstra all reached double figures.
Elliott led the attack with a match-high 12 kills and added a season-best four blocks.
Hartman and Dykstra each slammed 10 kills as Northern Iowa finished the afternoon hitting .243 with 46 total kills.
The Panthers were equally disruptive defensively, piling up 10 team blocks and reaching double figures in blocking for the third consecutive match.
UNI took control midway through the opening set.
After the teams battled to a 6-6 tie, Northern Iowa began creating separation behind Maryn Bixby and Grace Hannam, who each recorded four kills in the frame.
Hannam also contributed two blocks as the Panthers hit .220 with 16 kills and built their advantage to as many as five points.
UNI finished off the opening set 25-20.
The Panthers grabbed the lead early in the second when Dykstra delivered an ace on the third point of the set.
Northern Iowa never gave it back.
UNI hit .281 with 15 kills and three blocks while keeping Utah Valley’s offense under control, eventually taking the set 25-21 and moving within one frame of the sweep.
Northern Iowa briefly fell behind early in the third before putting together its most convincing stretch of the match.
The Panthers hammered 15 more kills, added five blocks and stretched their lead to nine points late in the set.
UNI closed it out 25-17 to finish the sweep.
Hannam established a career high with six kills while also recording five blocks. It marked her third consecutive match with at least five blocks.
Bixby made an immediate impact in her first appearance of the season after missing Northern Iowa’s first four matches because of injury. She finished with five kills and three blocks after leading the Panthers with 119 total blocks last season.
Hartman added a season-high four blocks and seven digs to her 10 kills.
The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year finished the afternoon just 26 kills shy of becoming the 32nd player in UNI history to reach 1,000 career kills.
Her 10-kill performance was the 36th double-digit kill match of her career.
Dykstra recorded her 29th career match with at least 10 kills and third of the season, while Elliott reached double figures in kills for the seventh time in her career.
Reese Booth directed the Northern Iowa offense with 39 assists.
Jadyn Petersen led the defense with 17 digs, while Taryn Rice added eight.
Sophie Buysse also recorded the first service ace of her collegiate career during the third set.
Friday’s match was the first-ever women’s volleyball meeting between Northern Iowa and Utah Valley.
The victory sent the Panthers into their South Dakota Classic finale against host South Dakota on Saturday.
That match turned into a five-set heartbreaker for UNI, but Hartman delivered a historic performance with a career-high 31 kills and reached 1,000 career kills as Northern Iowa fell 17-15 in the deciding fifth set.
The Panthers next head to Houston, Texas, where they will face No. 10 Creighton on Friday, September 11, in the opening match of the Rice Invitational. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse.
