MASON CITY – The Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery continues planning for this year’s History Walk which will be held on Saturday, September 28th. Mark your calendars for this entertaining and educational event which consists of an afternoon walk, a chili supper and an evening stroll.
Volunteers interested in getting involved in the production of the history walk are encouraged to attend the next planning session on Wednesday, July 10th at 6:00 pm at the Cemetery Office.
The afternoon walk will portray the lives of these early pioneers and citizens:
John McMillin, 1824-1885, First Settler in Mason City, own the first store in town
Mary Owen, 1852-1944, Daughter of AC Owen, settled in Owens grove as a child
Joseph Stork, 1826-1917, Settled in Clear Lake area around 1871,
Matilda Russell, 1813-1890, Early settler, wife of John Russell
Reverend Carolan, 1844-1917, Catholic Priest in early years of Mason City
Josephine Maben, 1858-1935, Recorder in new 1902 County Courthouse
The evening stroll will highlight the interesting lives of:
Ed Hughes, 1863-1898, His wife, arrested for murdering him, will plead her case
Tim O’Brien, 1845-1893, Detective who was shot during a train robbery
Mary Jenkinson, 1839-1903, Dunked in the river for making a thoughtless statement
Edwin Hansford, 1875-1907, He was struck by lighting at the young age of 32

Volunteers help as tour guides, actors, researching, ticket sales, publicity, refreshments, set up, etc. Actors and actresses are especially needed to portray the people from the past.
