CLEAR LAKE — Mary A. Hill, 86, of Clear Lake, died peacefully Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at her home surrounded by her family.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 11, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 First Avenue North in Clear Lake, with Pastor Will Hunsaker officiating. Burial will follow at Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, September 10, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.
Mary was born January 11, 1940, in Mason City, the daughter of Vern and Phyllis (Lucas) Larson.
Her family spent a couple of years in California during her childhood before returning to Clear Lake, where Mary would establish deep roots and spend much of her life.
She became the mother of two children, Randy and Sue, and was able to remain at home while raising them.
Mary demonstrated that a strong work ethic did not have an age limit. At 65, she began receiving services through NIVC, where her dedication and willingness to work quickly became apparent. She continued working until July 2026, only shortly before her death.
Away from work, Mary enjoyed gardening, crafts, bicycle rides around Clear Lake and shopping trips to larger cities.
She also enjoyed parades, cartoons and old movies.
Travel held a special place in Mary’s life. She especially enjoyed trips with her “Off the Beaten Path” group, which took her to destinations around the country, including Niagara Falls.
Mary was also known for some unmistakably personal touches.
She accumulated a colorful collection of hair scrunchies, enjoyed wearing tiaras and possessed a playful sense of humor that regularly brought smiles to those around her.
Giving to others brought Mary particular happiness. Family and friends remember a woman who willingly shared what she had and enjoyed brightening someone else’s day.
Mary is survived by her son, Randy Hill of Clear Lake; daughter, Sue Hill of Clear Lake; grandchildren Jennifer Akers and Greg Shurtz of Mason City, Steven Akers and Danielle Ryczek of Tampa, Florida, Christopher Evenson, Amber Evenson and Jessica Evenson; great-grandchildren Paisley Akers and Dylan Evenson; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Vern and Phyllis Larson, and son-in-law, Mark Akers.
