OBIT: Ida A. Haugen

Ida died June 29, 2023, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa at the age of 95. She was married to Delmer “Duffy” Haugen January 31, 1948. The couple made their home on the Haugen family farm near Rake, Iowa, where they raised their five daughters.

A funeral service for Ida Haugen, 95, of Rake, will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at West Lutheran Cemetery in Rake.

Ida Alice, daughter of Benard “Ben” and Alice (Ites) Rippentrop, was born November 30, 1927, on the family farm near Delavan, Minnesota. She was married to Delmer “Duffy” Haugen January 31, 1948. The couple made their home on the Haugen family farm near Rake, Iowa, where they raised their five daughters. Ida was a hard worker, not only raising her children and running the household, but also working at Walker Deluxe (later Fleet Guard) for 32 years. Even after retirement Ida made Christmas wreaths and helped her church group make quilts. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. The family moved into the town of Rake in 1962.

Ida was a fun-loving individual, full of humor and wit. She made friends wherever she went and was a good friend to many people. Ida was a good cook and liked to feed her visitors. She and Duffy enjoyed dancing together. Ida liked her cats and flowers, and she loved children and babies. She enjoyed playing in card clubs and taking trips to the casino. Ida hand-painted rocks and fed and watched wild birds. She was immensely proud of her five daughters and their spouses, whom she considered her “sons.”

Ida died June 29, 2023, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa at the age of 95. She received loving care there from staff members and from North Iowa Hospice. Survivors include her five daughters: Colleen (Doug) Danger of Buffalo Center, IA, Donna (Mike) Ryg of Litchfield, MN, Susan Espeland of Albert Lea, MN, Diane (Bill) Swearingen of Thompson, IA, and Judy (Jim) Sell of Joice, IA; grandchildren: Lisa Olson, Brian “Butch” Elwood, Laurie Steffen, Michelle Defries, Steven Espeland, Jeffrey Espeland, Jodi Nordskog, Jay Swearingen, and Katie Kaufman; 23 great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren and one on the way; brother Bob Rippentrop; and sister-in-law LaVon Rippentrop. Ida was preceded in death by her parents; husband Duffy in 1990; brothers: Ray, Alvie, and Tom Rippentrop; sisters: Gen Davis, Onie Willner, Dorothy Willner, and Ruthie Rippentrop; and sons-in-law Duane “Eno” Elwood and Stan Espeland.
