MASON CITY — A suspect was jailed early Saturday after Mason City police responded to a suspicious situation call downtown and arrested him on drug and probation-related charges.

Mason City police were called at 12:36 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2026, to 112 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City for a suspicious person, vehicle or other complaint, according to police incident information.

Shawn Michael Newman (pictured at top), 38, was arrested in connection with the call.

According to Mason City police and Cerro Gordo County Jail records, Newman faces charges of possession of a controlled substance — methamphetamine, first offense; possession of a controlled substance — marijuana, first offense; possession of drug paraphernalia; and violation of probation.

Newman was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail at 2:01 a.m. Saturday.

Jail records listed bond amounts of $5,000 cash only in the defendant’s name on the probation violation charge, along with cash or surety bonds of $1,000, $1,000 and $300 on the other charges.

The case remains pending.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation. Newman is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
