CLEAR LAKE — Larry Dean Hoffman, a longtime Clear Lake resident remembered for his devotion to family, farming, community service, humor and love for animals, has died.

Hoffman, 84, of Clear Lake, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Born on August 13, 1941, to Phillip and La Vonne Hoffman, Larry graduated from Klemme High School and went on to work for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for several years. He later built a life rooted in hard work, family and the land.

Larry married Lorraine Smith on September 8, 1963, and the couple raised three children together. Along with working at Nieman’s, Larry farmed beside Lorraine for 23 years, caring for nearly 300 acres. Farming was more than a job to him. It was a way of life, and one he took great pride in.

He also made time for the people and activities that mattered around him. Larry served in community roles with the JC’s, Clear Lake Elevator and the school board. He coached softball and baseball and chaperoned school band trips when his children were involved.

Family members also remember him as a man with a strong sense of humor, a caring heart and a willingness to help others. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, but his greatest joy came from time spent with family and his dogs. He had a special affection for animals, especially his beloved pups.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Hoffman; his parents; his daughter, Holly Hoffman; and his sister, Judy Dhondt.

He is survived by his children, Scott Hoffman and his wife, Amanda, and Wendy Mills and her husband, Tom; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; his brother, Art Hoffman and his wife, Janette; and his brother-in-law, Keith Dhondt.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 1st Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with Pastor Melinda McVey officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the service, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel is handling arrangements. To read more and see the full obituary, please click here.
