John Rankin, Charles City man who died in Clear Lake fishing accident, remembered

CHARLES CITY — John J. Rankin, a Charles City man who died after an accidental drowning while fishing at Clear Lake, is being remembered by family and friends. Rankin, 70, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. He was born on August 5, 1955. A memorial service for Rankin was held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City, with Pastor Joan Thomas from the United Methodist Church in Greene officiating.

CHARLES CITY — John J. Rankin, a Charles City man who died after an accidental drowning while fishing at Clear Lake, is being remembered by family and friends.

Rankin, 70, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. He was born on August 5, 1955.

A memorial service for Rankin was held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City, with Pastor Joan Thomas from the United Methodist Church in Greene officiating.

A gathering of family and friends was held before the service at the funeral home.

The family suggested memorials be directed to Our Brother’s Keeper, care of Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee Street, Charles City, Iowa 50616.

Rankin’s death marks a heartbreaking loss tied to one of North Iowa’s most familiar outdoor places, where generations of residents have spent time fishing, boating and enjoying the water.
