MASON CITY — The Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors approved fiscal year 2027 elected official salaries, employee payroll actions, tax abatements, a budget amendment and county road planning items during its regular meeting on May 26, 2026.

Supervisors Casey Callanan, Carl Ginapp and Chris Watts were present for the meeting, which began at 10 a.m. The board approved the agenda and the minutes from the May 18 regular session before holding a public comment session.

Supervisors approved county claims, then approved fiscal year 2027 employee payroll effective July 1, 2026.

The board also approved a payroll change request for Merrin Hanson in the Conservation Department at $17 per hour, effective May 26, 2026. Supervisors then approved the payroll register for the period ending May 16, 2026.

One of the larger actions of the meeting came when supervisors approved fiscal year 2027 salary recommendations for elected officials. The raises were approved at 2.75 percent for the county attorney, auditor, recorder, sheriff, supervisors and treasurer.

Under the approved schedule, the county attorney’s salary will rise from $156,145 to $160,439. The auditor, recorder and treasurer salaries will each rise from $96,217 to $98,863. The sheriff’s salary will rise from $155,656 to $159,937. Supervisor salaries will rise from $53,903 to $55,385.

Supervisors also approved dock permit 60P and reappointed Jessica Reith and Cecil Foell to the Veterans Affairs Commission.

A public hearing on the fiscal year 2026 budget amendment opened at 10:05 a.m. According to the meeting minutes, the county finance director explained that an amount had been placed on the wrong line in the publication, but said the total was correct and in compliance after clarification with the state and external auditor.

After the hearing was closed, supervisors approved the fiscal year 2025-2026 budget amendment.

The board also approved supplemental appropriations for fiscal year 2026. The listed supplemental appropriations included $3,000 for non-department, $35,300 for the Board of Supervisors, $146,139 for county grants, $3,284 for county libraries, a reduction of $1,092,854 for special projects, $15,000 for the auditor, $8,500 for the treasurer, $14,700 for the attorney, a reduction of $238,000 for the sheriff, $20,279 for postage, $1,040,000 for secondary roads, $442,219 for the health department, a reduction of $18,000 for mental health advocate/human services, $25,800 for court services, $7,693 for GIS and $250,000 for no department.

County Engineer Brandon Billings provided an update to the board. Supervisors then approved the fiscal year 2026 Iowa Department of Transportation five-year construction plan amendment and the fiscal year 2026 Iowa DOT budget amendment, authorizing the chair to sign both items.

The board entered closed session at 10:24 a.m. under Iowa Code Section 21.5(1)(c) to discuss strategy with counsel in matters that are presently in litigation or where litigation is imminent, where disclosure would be likely to prejudice or disadvantage the county’s position.
