NIACC’s Smith wins 3,000 at Panther Open Saturday

niacc_trojans_logoCEDAR FALLS – NIACC sophomore Trent Smith won the 3,000-meter run at the Panther Open Saturday.

The former Charles City standout won the race in 9 minutes, 3.21 seconds.

At the 2012 Panther Open, Smith placed sixth in 9:15.61.

Also for the NIACC men Saturday, freshman Alex Lugo (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was fifth in the 300 (37.45) and freshman Matt Bowman (Charlotte, Ia.) was fifth in the mile-run (4:39.84) and seventh in the 800 (2:10.21). Sophomore Jonny Worley (Greene, Ia.) was sixth in the 600 (1:27.06) and sixth in the 1,000 (2:38.55).

Freshman Sapolai Yao (Papua New Guinea) was seventh in the 3,000 (9:22.74) and freshman Mason Powers (Gilbert, Ia.) was eighth in the 3,000 (9:25.22). Sophomore Trey Taylor (Bloomfield, Conn.) was seventh in the weight throw (15.96 meters) and freshman Tim Roberts (Doonside, Australia) was seventh in the 60 (7.52).

For the Lady Trojans Saturday, freshman Dieuwertje Boelen (Brooklyn, Ia.) placed third in the 300-meter dash in a time of 48.61 seconds at the Panther Open Saturday.

Also for the Lady Trojans Saturday, sophomore Emily Burchett (Mayview, Mo.) was fifth in the weight throw (14.36 meters) and seventh in the shot put (11.40 meters).

The Lady Trojans 4×400-meter relay team placed seventh in 4:38.48 and Hillary Garvey (Hudson, Ia.) was 11th in the 200 (28.51).

NIACC returns to action Jan. 18-19 at the Iowa State Open in Ames.
