NIACC’s Minto wins 184-pound title at Central; Spotts second

PELLA – NIACC sophomore Basil Minto (Cape Coral, Fla.) won the 184-pound title at the Central College Invitational on Saturday.

Also placing for the Trojans were freshman Blake Spotts (2nd at 141 pounds), freshman JP Gamez (4th at 125 pounds), freshman Thomas Daniels (4th at 174 pounds) and freshman Shakheim Chapman (4th at 197 pounds).

Minto, who is ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds by the NJCAA, topped Augustana’s Jordan Richardson 2-1 in the finals. Minto received a first-round bye and pinned Augustana’s Seth Whan in 2 minutes, 12 seconds in the semifinals.

Spotts was pinned by Wartburg College’s Andrew Johnson in the finals of his 141 pound match in 5:32. Spotts topped Central’s Bryan Connolly 4-3 in his first-round match, beat Wartburg’s Dexter Bass 3-1 in the quarterfinals and beat Augustana’s Hector Ruiz 15-11 in the semifinals.

NIACC opens its dual season Tuesday at Ellsworth.
