Jeremiah Mumford, who’s charged with shooting two officers after an attempted bank robbery in Maynard on Tuesday, was a “flop” as a worker, but his former employer said Wednesday that she only had a brief time to assess his performance because he never came back after two days of garden work.
“He worked two days, either the first day of June or the last day of May and first day of June,” said Donna Furleigh, owner of Furleigh Fruit and Vegetable Farm in Clear Lake. “He lived near a neighbor and that’s how we (hired) him.”
Mumford, 24, of New Hampton, and William Clayton, 19, of Osage, are accused of attempting to rob the Maynard Savings Bank on Tuesday and shooting a state trooper and a police chief during a seven-hour manhunt before being captured near Frederika, according to police reports.
Neither man had been charged in connection with the bank robbery by late Wednesday, but Mumford is charged with four counts of terrorism and six counts of attempted murder, and Clayton is charged with four counts of terrorism and six counts of aiding and abetting attempted murder. A judge set a $1 million cash-only bond for each man during an initial appearance in Bremer County District Court.
If convicted, Mumford and Clayton could face up to life in prison. Each charge of terrorism carries a sentence of up to 25 years, and the penalty for attempted murder is up to 50 years.
Little is known about Mumford and Clayton. According to their Facebook pages, they both attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. There’s no information on how long the two have been acquainted, but Mumford just “friended” Clayton on Tuesday.
Phone and email messages were left with family and friends of both men Wednesday.
A manager at Osage Payless Foods, where Clayton was employed according to Facebook, said he had no comment.
Mumford has one previous charge of fourth-degree theft in Cerro Gordo County and a contempt violation for not paying child support in Kansas, according to online court records. Clayton has only two traffic citations and no record of any criminal charges.
More than 50 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies participated in the manhunt after the attempted bank robbery, which took place about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Special Agent Larry Hedlund of the Division of Criminal Investigation said the men used multiple rifles and handguns to shoot at officers who were pursuing them. He called it a “running gunbattle.” Shortly after the shooting, he said, the suspects abandoned their vehicle in a quarry west of Maynard and fled on foot.
Two law enforcement officers, Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain and Iowa State Patrol Trooper Mark Domino, were injured in the shooting. Cain was shot in the neck, hand and thumb and underwent surgery Tuesday night in Waterloo. Domino, who was shot through his right bicep, was treated and released.
The manhunt ended about 7 p.m. Tuesday when Mumford and Clayton were apprehended near Frederika without incident.

A couple of Rocket Scientist who just couldn’t make it. Now they will find out that shooting a cop is a very bad idea. Robbing a bank isn’t to swift either.
