WEST UNION — A Green man was arrested after Fayette County deputies say they found him asleep in a vehicle parked partly in the roadway and facing oncoming traffic.
The incident happened at approximately 4:40 AM on June 13, 2026, when Fayette County deputies investigated a report of a suspicious vehicle near Quarry Road and Highway 18.
Deputies said they found a male driver asleep in the vehicle, which was parked partially in the roadway and facing opposing traffic. The driver was identified as John Gilbert Osborn, 62, of Greene.
Osborn was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance — methamphetamine — and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are pending upon completion.
Osborn (pictured at top) was initially held in the Fayette County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. Iowa court records show a surety bond was posted on June 17 through Lederman Bail Bonds.
Court filings in Fayette County District Court show the case is listed as State of Iowa vs. John Gilbert Osborn, case number AGCR075896. A criminal complaint was filed June 13, and an initial appearance order set a preliminary hearing for June 24. Court records later show Osborn waived his preliminary hearing, and the hearing was canceled on June 18.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the West Union Police Department and a Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office canine handler.
Osborn is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
