Who will win Group C at the 2024 Copa America: preview

The 2024 Copa America will be held in the United States instead of Ecuador from June 20 to July 14 this year. The tournament will involve 16 teams divided into four groups, 10 of them will represent CONMEBOL and another 6 from CONCACAF. The two strongest national teams from each quartet will make it to the playoffs.

The following national teams will compete for victory in Group C and access to the quarterfinals of the tournament: Uruguay, USA, Bolivia and Panama. To more accurately determine who will win a given quartet, it is necessary to study each of the warring parties.

Uruguay

The Sky Blues did not always look convincing in 2023, but they scored points quite regularly in South America’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Having lost away to Ecuador, and also in Barranquilla, without revealing the strongest against Colombia, the Uruguayans won four victories. Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia were defeated by Marcelo Bielsa’s team. Having scored 10 goals in these confrontations, the “heavenly Olympians” conceded only one goal in response.

In terms of gameplay, the “heavenly Olympians” look very confident and are absolutely deservedly the main favorite of the “C” quartet. It should also be noted that Charrua is one of the three main contenders for victory in the tournament. Based on the fact that the Uruguayans are able to compete with the Argentines and Brazilians, this team should not be underestimated.

USA

Last summer, the Stars and Stripes were eliminated from Panama in a series of post-match penalty kicks. Then, in friendly matches, the Americans beat Uzbekistan, Oman and Ghana with a total score of 11:0, but Tyler Adams and his partners lost to Germany and Slovenia. It should also be noted that Gregg Berhalter’s team in the CONCACAF Nations League turned out to be stronger than Trinidad and Tobago – 4:2.

The Yankees are not stable in terms of gameplay and periodically lose even to not particularly formidable opponents. At the same time, the tournament will be held in the United States of America and, with the support of their native stands, the Stars and Stripes must give their best. However, it will be difficult for the Americans to count on first place in the quartet, because the “heavenly Olympians” are in excellent shape and are unlikely to let the North American team ahead of them.

Bolivia

The Greens in 2023 looked terrible in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and only managed one win at home to Peru. Bolivia also lost to Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay. Having scored only two goals in these matches, Antonio Carlos Zago’s boys conceded 14 goals in response. The Bolivians have reached the final stage of the 2024 America’s Cup, but the team is unlikely to be able to perform confidently in this tournament.

In terms of gameplay, the Bolivians play poorly. The teams have problems both in attack and defense. The “greens” squad is not strong and the games will not be played in La Paz, where Marcelo Moreno and company most often score points. Panama

The Red Tide were exceptionally victorious in the last four official matches of 2023. First, he won against Curacao and Guatemala with a combined score of 5:1. Then, in the playoffs, Panama defeated Costa Rica in two battles. Having scored six goals in these matches, the Canalers conceded only one goal from the Costa Ricans. Also, in two sparring matches with Qingdao Hainiu and Uruguay U20, Thomas Christiansen’s guys were stronger.

The Channelers look great in terms of gameplay and in official matches in 2023 they lost only to Mexico and Canada. The Red Tide are unlikely to win the group, but Panama will definitely try to surprise and compete for second place.

Our forecast

Bolivia looks very weak and, most likely, the “greens” will end up in last place in the quartet. Panama and the United States could compete for a second spot in the playoffs. At the same time, at home, preference should still be given to the “stars and stripes”. Uruguay looks the strongest of the four and one of the most formidable teams in the tournament. So the “heavenly Olympians” are unlikely to experience any difficulties and will make it to the relegation battles after winning the group.
