Former Mohawk Buckley tallies 8 assists in Cyclones’ win over UNI

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Iowa State’s women’s basketball team (3-3 overall, 0-0 Big 12) topped Northern Iowa (3-3, 0-0 MVC), 84-75. The Cyclones double-doubles by Seanna Johnson and Bryanna Fernstrom to win its 12th straight against the Panthers.

Iowa State went on a 6-0 run to start things off with three different Cyclones putting points on the board. After a 3-pointer by Kidd Blaskowsky, UNI was forced to call a timeout. Iowa State would grow its lead by going on another 7-0 run in the first quarter to get out to a 15-4 lead. The Cyclones closed the first quarter going 4-of-5 from the field, while UNI went 0-of-8, giving ISU a 19-6 lead.

UNI’s offense started to click in the second quarter as the Panthers trimmed a 15-point ISU lead to five by the end of the second quarter. Iowa State entered its locker room with a 36-31 lead. Seanna Johnson led all scorers at the half with 10 points off 5-of-9 shooting. She also added a game-high five rebounds.

The third quarter was full of excitement as UNI tied things up with a steal and a 3-point play at 49-49. UNI’s Amber Sorenson buried a 3-pointer to give UNI a 52-49 lead late in the third quarter. Iowa State would turn things up a notch and go on a 9-0 run to close the third quarter that was highlighted by a four-point play by Jadda Buckley. The Cyclones closed the third quarter with a 58-52 lead.

Iowa State would maintain its lead during the fourth quarter, holding a six-point lead at the under-5 timeout. A 3-pointer by Johnson and a short jumper by Fernstrom would break things open for the Cyclones as Iowa State went on to win 84-75.

Seanna Johnson scored a game-high 18 points off 10-of-16 shooting and hauled in 10 rebounds for her 18th career double-double and fifth of the season. The junior from Brooklyn Park, Minn. was all over the floor as she tallied three assists and five steals for the Cyclones.

Johnson reached double-figure scoring for the 42nd time in her career and tied her career-high with 28 points.

Former Mason City Mohawk Jadda Buckley finished with a career-high eight assists. She scored in double figures for the 24th time in her career.

Iowa State returns home after a five-game road swing to take on Southern on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
