MASON CITY – Two women were helped to safety Monday evening by a passer-by and a neighbor before firefighters arrived on the scene.
Around 4:30 PM Monday, a call for a possible car fire at 1119 1st Street NW was dispatched to the Mason City Fire Department. There was no evidence of flames, but there was smoke coming from the garage. Â Dispatch said people were advised to stay away from the car.
At the scene, the garage was filled with smoke, but still no flames were visible.
A witness, Arian Schuessler of Mason City, said that he was driving by and saw the smoke.  He stopped and assisted a neighbor by getting two women out of the house and into his van.
“I was on my way to Hy-Vee, just passing by, when I saw the smoke coming from the garage. I went into the house to get the lady out and the neighbor helped the other lady into my van,” he said.
I “just happened to by driving by on my way to the store,” Schuessler said via social media. “It was wild.”
The Mason City Fire Department eventually had the situation under control. Â There was no word on the amount of damage to the house and car The women appeared to be shaken up and may have been treated at the scene.
