Police rule out Klunder in Evansdale child killings

EVANSDALE – Police are saying that a man who killed one child after an abduction is not the culprit behind the slaying of two cousins in 2012.

Evansdale Police Chief Kent Smock was quoted in the Waterloo Courier as saying the notorious killer who committed suicide has been cleared in the deaths of Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins, who vanished in July of 2012, prompting a massive search that ended in December of that year.

“After we put everything together, and reviewed and re-reviewed and did more follow-ups, it just doesn’t appear that he had been in this area on that particular day,” Smock told the Courier.

“We believe he was over near his home on the 13th of July, either at home or at work or traveling in between,” Smock added.

Klunder was a suspect due to the similarities between his abduction of two young girls in May of 2013, in which one girl escaped, but the other was killed. Klunder committed suicide before police caught up with him.

Police are still searching for the killer of Lyric and Elizabeth.
