Forest City, Iowa – Waldorf College is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012-2013 Salveson Prizes in Poetry and Prose.  The prizes, named after Waldorf College’s founder, honor outstanding poems and exceptional pieces of prose with a monetary award and publication in Waldorf’s literary journal, Crusader.

The Salveson Prize winner in poetry was Marisa Donnelly for her piece, “Reasons Why I Love My Mother.” Honorable mentions in poetry include Kaylin Tlam and April DeVries-Calteux. The prize for prose went to Barb Lange for her piece, “Facing the Music.” Honorable mentions in prose include Marisa Donnelly and Tori Lagel.

All contest decisions are made by outside judges, who are esteemed writers and teachers. Brandon Courtney, this year’s judge, was born and raised in Iowa, served four years in the United States Navy, and is a graduate of the MFA program at Hollins University. His poetry is forthcoming or appears in Best New Poets, The Journal, The Raleigh Review, 32 Poems, and The Los Angeles Review, among many others. His work has received multiple Pushcart Prize nominations, and he recently won an Academy of American Poets Prize.
