CHARLES CITY — A suspect already on probation in two Floyd County criminal mischief cases was collared after police say a vehicle tore through the Westwood Ball Diamonds park area, struck a barrier cable and led officers to a felony drunk-driving arrest scene where he did not go quietly.
According to the Charles City Police Department, officers were called at 7:37 AM on July 1, 2026, for a report of a vehicle that drove through the park area at the Westwood Ball Diamonds and hit a barrier cable.
Police said the driver was later found.
At 7:53 AM, officers conducted a traffic stop near 16th Avenue and Cottage Court. As a result of the investigation, Theo Tyler, 22, of Charles City, was arrested.
Tyler was charged with operating while intoxicated, third offense, which is a felony under Iowa law. Police said he was also charged with driving while license suspended, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, failure to wear a seatbelt and failure to provide insurance related to an accident.
The case took another serious turn when police said Tyler was also charged with assault on a peace officer. The police bulletin did not provide additional details about the alleged assault.
According to Floyd County jail information, Tyler (pictured at top) was booked into custody at 8:20 PM on July 1, 2026, by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office. Jail records show he bonded out and was listed as out of custody as of 11:02 AM on July 3, 2026.
Court records show Tyler was already on probation in Floyd County case FECR029560. In that case, he was placed on five years of probation on March 21, 2024, after receiving a deferred judgment on a Class D felony second-degree criminal mischief charge and pleading guilty to third-degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor.
In that same case, the court imposed a two-year prison sentence on the aggravated misdemeanor count, then suspended the prison term and placed Tyler on probation. Records show Tyler later faced probation violation proceedings. A 2024 violation led to a contempt adjudication and a 180-day residential facility sentence, with Tyler remaining on probation. A 2025 violation led to another contempt adjudication and a 10-day jail sentence with credit for time served.
A new probation violation report was filed July 2, 2026, one day after the Charles City ball diamonds incident.
Tyler is also on probation in a second Floyd County case, AGCR030638. Court records show he pleaded guilty on September 23, 2025, to third-degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was sentenced to a two-year prison term, but that sentence was suspended, and he was placed on probation for two years. The sentence also required a substance abuse and mental health evaluation within 30 days.
That case stemmed from an August 12, 2025, Charles City police investigation in the 200 block of Kelly Street involving a report of a vehicle being egged. Court records show a probation violation was later filed in that case with an offense date of July 8, 2026.
The latest case began with the reported damage at the Westwood Ball Diamonds and ended minutes later with a traffic stop, a felony OWI charge and an assault-on-a-peace-officer allegation. The police bulletin did not list the amount of damage caused at the park or describe any injuries.
Tyler is presumed innocent on the new charges and pending probation matters unless and until proven guilty in court.
