The Des Moines Police Department is requesting the community’s assistance with the ongoing investigation of an abandoned and emaciated dog.
At approximately 4:30 PM on December 10, 2024, a dog was delivered to the City Of Des Moines Animal Services facility, 1441 Harriett Street, after being found abandoned alongside the SE 14th Street railroad viaduct.
When found, the male Bulldog’s body was inside a plastic trashbag, secured closed with tape, rendering the dog unable to walk. The dogs head was outside of the bag. The person who reported finding the dog said that what caught his attention as he drove by and saw the trash bag, it appeared to be moving.
At the time of his recovery, veterinary staff found the dog to be emaciated, weighing slightly over 23 pounds. One notable feature of the dog is that its ears have been cropped, suggesting possible prior veterinary care, police explained.
The dog remains under the care of veterinary staff, police said.
If you have witnessed animal cruelty, call your local police.
