CHARLES CITY — Douglas “Doug” Richard Neal, 59, of Charles City, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2026, at UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be scheduled for a future date.
Doug was born July 20, 1967, in Charles City, the son of Richard and Josephine Wiens Neal.
He spent many years traveling the country as a cross-country semi-truck driver. Health concerns eventually prompted Doug to change careers, and he worked for several years as an overnight stocker at Walmart in Mason City.
Doug knew the store’s inventory well and could readily explain which products sold more quickly than others. At Thanksgiving, his contribution was always his favorite Marie Callender’s pumpkin pie.
An avid Minnesota Vikings fan, Doug carefully analyzed the team’s games as though he were coaching from the sidelines.
Doug also cherished his dogs, Alex and later Carter, who provided him with loyal companionship through the years.
He had a special place in his heart for his niece and rarely returned from a shopping trip without bringing her a new toy. Doug also enjoyed attending the annual Cedar Valley Engine Club show each Labor Day weekend.
Doug will be remembered as a beloved son, brother, uncle and great-uncle.
Those left to cherish his memory include his father, Richard “Dick” Neal; sisters, Rochelle “Chel” Stewart and her husband, Todd, and Jacqueline “Jacki” McLaughlin and her husband, Mike; niece, Justine “Justi” Stewart Blanchard and her husband, Anthony; great-nieces, Charlotte and Elle; and great-nephew, Brody.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine “Josie” Neal.
