MASON CITY — Duane “Gus” Marvin Brandt, 96, of Mason City, died Monday, September 14, 2026, at the IOOF Home, leaving a legacy of teaching, coaching and helping generations of North Iowa students.
Private family services are planned. Following his wishes, his body was donated to the University of Iowa for medical research. His final resting place will be Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
Gus served in the Air Force, including a year in Korea, before beginning his education career in Osage. He later taught, coached and served as a junior high principal in Clear Lake.
His 26 years at NIACC included work as athletic director, registrar, financial aid director and head baseball coach. He retired in 1993.
Gus and his wife, Jo Anne, enjoyed traveling together. He also loved bridge and remained a devoted Hawkeye fan. His influence continues through the Gus Brandt Endowed Scholarship, established by members of Clear Lake High School’s Class of 1964.
He leaves daughter Deborah, son Barry, grandson Aaron and two great-grandchildren. His wife, parents and brother preceded him in death.
