Teens shot and arrested after shooting spree in Des Moines

DES MOINES - Police in Iowa's capitol city of Des Moines had their hands full after a recent shooting spree with scores of shots fired and teens injured and arrested.

DES MOINES – Police in Iowa’s capitol city of Des Moines had their hands full after a recent shooting spree with scores of shots fired and teens injured and arrested.

Des Moines police say the incident took place overnight on September 7, 2023. DMPD detectives investigated two overnight, potentially connected, shooting incidents. Shortly after 10 PM, an officer on patrol reported hearing over two dozen gunshots. Immediately following his report, officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Clark Street to investigate a shooting. Responding officers found a 17-yr-old male with a gunshot injury to the torso. Des Moines Fire Department medics transported him to a local hospital where he remained hospitalized in serious condition. At the scene, officers recovered a handgun that was identified as being stolen from Mississippi. Nearby the scene, officers detained a 17-yr-old male who was in possession of a handgun.

Shortly before 11:30 pm, officers responded to a shooting incident in the 1300 block of E. 17th Ct. Fortunately, no injuries were reported there, however, a home and vehicle were hit by gunfire. Nearby the scene, officers detained a 16-yr-old male who was armed with a handgun. Two other persons were able to elude officers.

“73 minutes… one person shot, two juveniles taken into custody, three handguns seized, and over 30 rounds fired in our neighborhoods,” police said. “Excellent work by our street cops, with a solid ongoing investigation by Crimes Against Persons detectives.”
