MASON CITY – A new and smoother rail crossing has been installed on 15th Street SW in Mason City.
The project was completed jointly by the City of Mason City and the Iowa Traction Railroad, according to a city memo; the expense was shared.
The project includes the installation of a second set of tracks for the railroad and repair of the crossing in this area.
“The crossing has deteriorated at a greater rate than anticipated,” City Administrator Brent Trout said in a memo, “creating a potential hazard for the approximately four thousand vehicles using that route on a daily basis.”
State funding was not available soon enough to be applied to the possibly dangerous conditions of the crossing, so the City acted to complete the project quickly. It was a non-budgeted project. It cost the City approximately $80,000 to $85,000.
