Police say Iowa woman attacked and tried to kill another woman with a baseball bat

FARRAGUT, IOWA – An Iowa woman suffered severe injuries when a suspect with a baseball bat attacked her.

On September 15, 2024 at 2:59 PM, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a disturbance in the 1000 block of Essex Avenue in Farragut, Iowa. The victim advised she was being assaulted with a baseball bat.

Deputies arrived and after an investigation, placed 47-year-old Sylvia Marie Hayes (pictured at top) of Farragut, Iowa, into custody without incident. The victim was transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

During the investigation deputies discovered evidence that Hayes intended to kill the victim with the baseball bat.

Hayes is being held on:

1. Attempted Murder, a Class B Felony
2. Willful Injury, causing serious injury, a Class C Felony
3. Going Armed with Intent, a Class D Felony
4. Domestic Abuse 2nd Degree, an Aggravated Misdemeanor

Hayes is being held without bond, pending initial appearance with a Fremont County Magistrate.
