HAMPTON, IOWA – Law enforcement was investigating an apparent homicide late Sunday night and into Monday in Hampton.
Sources tell NIT a potentially violent incident unfolded in the 600 block of 1st Street NE. There were at least three law enforcement vehicles parked in from of a residence there.
Later, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) appeared on the scene.
On Monday, Hampton Chief of Police Robert Schaefer told NIT that on Sunday December 13, 2015 at approximately 5:48 PM, Franklin County Dispatch received a call of a possible suicidal subject at 621 1st Street NE in Hampton. Upon further investigation Officers discovered that the victim 51 year old Michelle Key of Waterloo was deceased with a gunshot wound. Michelle Key’s boyfriend, 60 year old Ronald Lee Rand was arrested & charged with First Degree Murder. Rand is being held at the Franklin County LEC Holding Facility awaiting his initial appearance. The Hampton Police Department was assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County Medical Examiner, Franklin County Attorney’s Office, and Franklin General Ambulance.
