First Annual North Iowa Herb Festival Entertains Clear Lake

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

CLEAR LAKE – A few sprinkles and dark clouds didn’t damper the First Annual Herb Festival held on Saturday, June 23 and hosted by The Healing House Herb Shop in Clear Lake.

The event started at 10:00 a.m. and featured crafts by local artisans, honey, baked goods, herbs (dried and fresh), garden crafts, fresh flowers and plants and garden produce.

Besides opening an umbrella for a short time, people enjoyed the outdoor vendors, food and music. Many plants, garden and yard decorations were available to look at and purchase. Overheard by a customer, “Mom, this is unique, this is something that would look nice in my yard.”

As the crowd browsed through tent after tent, in the background they could hear the live bluegrass music being performed by The Oak Street Ramblers. It was quaint and relaxing. The Ramblers, who are from Madison, Wisconsin, were Betty Stattelman, Ian Alderman, Willie Jones, Jeff Kunkle, Mark Schlutt and Tina Thompson. The band, which started performing in 2004, released their debut CD recently and had it for sale at the event.

“And for our last number, before we take a quick break, we are asking volunteers to assist us. A couple of children would be fun,” said Alderman. They were very interactive with the audience.

Other activities throughout the day included a seminar on Bee Keeping 101, Children’s Herbal Walk for all ages, Natural Health Seminar and Master Gardening Tips and Tricks.

Ollie’s Herbal Tea Stand was up all day. It featured a uniquely blended, refreshing iced teas. Owner of Ollie’s Herbal Tea Stand and event organizer, Christen Sherwood, donated money brought in by sales of the tea to the Humane Society of North Iowa.

The Humane Society had adoptable pets to be petted and to be given to a good home at the event.

It was free admission and easy to find. It was just down the road from Central Garden’s which was hosting their 12th Annual Tour of Gardens and Homes.
