CHARLES CITY — A late-night stalled-vehicle call led Charles City police to a battered pickup, two damaged street signs and an unanswered question: Who was behind the wheel and caused thousands in damages?
Officers responded to the 700 block of South Grand Avenue at approximately 10:56 p.m. Thursday, September 24. They determined a 2011 GMC pickup had been involved in a crash and sustained extensive damage.
Police initially reported that the pickup had struck an unknown object. Officers then located two separate street signs that had been struck by the vehicle. The department estimated total damage at approximately $8,000 but did not provide a breakdown between the pickup and the signs.
Chatfield’s was called to remove the vehicle from the roadway. Police said the driver remained unidentified and the incident was still under investigation.
Leaving a property-damage crash can bring criminal consequences
A collision does not have to injure someone for a driver to face charges for failing to meet obligations afterward.
Iowa Code section 321.265 specifically covers crashes that damage property legally on or alongside a highway, including roadside fixtures. It requires drivers to take reasonable steps to locate and notify the property owner, a peace officer or the person responsible for the damaged property.
Drivers must provide their name, address and vehicle registration number, show their driver’s license if requested and available, and meet applicable crash-reporting requirements. Violating that section is a simple misdemeanor punishable as a scheduled traffic violation.
Charles City police have pursued leaving-the-scene charges in earlier investigations. In a separate 2019 case, a Charles City driver was charged after allegedly leaving a collision involving a parked vehicle.
In the South Grand Avenue investigation, however, police have not announced charges or established in their public report that the unidentified driver unlawfully left the scene. The cause of the crash and the driver’s identity remain under investigation.
