WATERLOO — A 17-year-old boy was found dead in a brushy area Saturday morning, launching a homicide investigation that led Waterloo detectives and tactical officers to execute a search warrant at a separate address.
Black Hawk County Consolidated Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a deceased person in the 1000 block of West 3rd Street at approximately 10:14 a.m. September 26.
Responding officers located the body and confirmed the victim was a 17-year-old male. Police said evidence at the scene indicated gunshots had been fired.
The teenager’s name was being withheld pending notification of his family, according to the department’s September 27 announcement.
Detectives and tactical team execute search warrant
As part of the investigation, Waterloo Police Detectives, assisted by the department’s Tactical Team, executed a search warrant at 314 Randolph Street.
Police did not disclose what investigators sought or recovered, or explain the address’s connection to the teenager’s death.
The announcement did not identify a suspect or announce an arrest. Authorities also did not release a specific cause of death or say when the gunfire occurred.
Detectives believe the death resulted from an isolated incident and said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The investigation remains active, with police saying no additional details would be released at this time.
Police seek information as investigation continues
The discovery follows other recent gunfire investigations in Waterloo covered by NIT.
In a separate case, authorities announced last week that a man involved in a September 16 officer-involved shooting had left the hospital and been taken into custody on felony charges.
Earlier this month, NIT reported that Waterloo police arrested a teenager accused of firing at an occupied home following an August 30 incident.
Police have announced no connection between those cases and the death discovered Saturday.
