CEDAR FALLS — UNI Panther volleyball made quick work of Murray State Saturday afternoon, crushing the Racers in three lopsided sets while extending one of the longest active conference winning streaks in Division I volleyball.
Northern Iowa swept Murray State 25-13, 25-10 and 25-9 inside the McLeod Center, pushing the Panthers’ remarkable Missouri Valley Conference regular-season winning streak to 54 consecutive matches dating back to the 2023 season.
The victory came after UNI crushed in-state rival Drake in straight sets to open MVC play earlier this week.
Saturday’s performance was even more dominant.
All 16 dressed Panthers saw action as Northern Iowa hit .330 for the match, hammered 37 kills against only seven attack errors and overwhelmed Murray State defensively with 10 blocks and nine service aces.
UNI outscored the Racers 75-32 over the three sets.
Panthers pull away and never look back
Murray State managed to hang around briefly in the opening set, battling UNI to a 5-5 tie.
Then the Panthers took off.
Northern Iowa ripped off five consecutive points and never surrendered control again. UNI produced 14 kills while hitting .316 and committed only two attack errors.
Reese Booth helped inflict damage from the service line as Northern Iowa rolled to a 25-13 victory.
Murray State grabbed an early advantage in the second set, but it didn’t last.
The Panthers’ offense caught fire, hitting a blistering .455 with 12 kills. Booth added another ace while Kamryn Vogt and Lily Dykstra each recorded four kills.
UNI turned the frame into another rout, 25-10.
There was no Racers comeback waiting in the third.
Northern Iowa led from start to finish, hitting .258 and putting away 11 kills while Grace Hannam helped control the net with three blocks.
The Panthers closed the afternoon with a 25-9 demolition to complete the sweep.
Dykstra leads balanced UNI attack
Dykstra led the match with 10 kills while hitting .375, adding three blocks and a service ace.
It marked her 11th match this season with at least 10 kills and the 41st double-digit kill performance of her UNI career.
Dykstra has been one of Northern Iowa’s most consistent offensive weapons this fall, including a 20-kill performance in UNI’s straight-set victory over Rice earlier this month.
Cassidy Hartman added seven kills and 14 digs Saturday, while Maryn Bixby finished with five kills and a match-high six blocks.
Vogt delivered four kills in her season debut, while Hannam recorded three kills and three blocks.
Booth stuffed the stat sheet with 31 assists and 11 digs for her eighth consecutive double-double. She also blasted a career-high five service aces.
The double-double was Booth’s 11th this season and 23rd of her career.
Jadyn Petersen anchored the defense with a match-high 22 digs and surpassed 700 career digs. Petersen has now gone 10 consecutive matches without committing a reception error and owns a .995 reception percentage this season.
UNI’s conference domination continues
Northern Iowa improved to 8-0 all-time against Murray State and 7-0 against the Racers since Murray State joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 2022.
More impressively, UNI has now won 54 consecutive MVC regular-season matches.
The streak is the second-longest active conference regular-season winning streak in Division I volleyball.
When postseason play is included, Northern Iowa has won 62 consecutive matches against Missouri Valley Conference opponents — the longest active streak of its kind in Division I volleyball.
The Panthers entered this season with lofty expectations after being picked to win a fifth consecutive Missouri Valley Conference championship.
After a challenging non-conference schedule that included nationally ranked opponents, UNI has wasted little time taking control once conference play arrived.
The Panthers have now swept their first two MVC opponents without dropping a set.
Northern Iowa’s defense has also become increasingly difficult to crack.
UNI has recorded at least 10 blocks in seven matches this season, including each of its last three contests, and has produced seven or more blocks in 12 of its 13 matches.
Saturday also provided opportunities for some new Panthers.
Payton Askelsen and Maggie Michaels made their collegiate debuts, while Vogt made her first appearance of the season. Askelsen recorded her first collegiate dig, and Vogt’s four kills established a career high.
Panthers hit the road
Northern Iowa returns to action Thursday, October 1, when the Panthers travel to Illinois State for another Missouri Valley Conference matchup.
First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. at CEFCU Arena.
UNI will then continue its Illinois road swing with a matchup against Bradley as the Panthers attempt to keep their lengthy MVC winning streak rolling.
