NIT – A study released Monday found that 18% of teens had tried hookah – a practice where flavored tobacco called shisha is smoked, passed through a water basin and then inhaled.
The study, “Hookah Use Among U.S. High School Seniors,” was conducted by the Journal of American Pediatrics. 5,540 high school seniors were interviewed as part of the survey.
Eighteen percent of students reported hookah use in the past year, according to the survey. Compared with white students, black students were at lower odds for use. High parent education increased the odds for use, and student weekly income from a job of over $50 per week or $11 to $50 per week from other sources also increased odds for use. Males and urban students were also at higher odds for use, as were users of alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit substances. Former cigarette smokers were at higher risk, and current smokers were at highest risk for use.
The study concluded that adolescents of higher socioeconomic status appear to be at particularly high risk for hookah use in the United States
According to cancer.org, hookah smoking is no safer than cigarette smoking.

I have never heard of Hookah before. The picture just look like a bong. Is Hookah big here in Mason City?
A Hookah bar was recently featured in Bar Rescue from Omaha. It bombed and they re-did the bar. I think they sell “Hookah” supplies and incense at Weasel’s Den Too in Mason City. It’s pretty much flavored smoke and not drug based…because that’s what Weasel says and he just got out of prison for not selling drugs. wink wink.
