OSAGE – The old courthouse in Osage has been gone for months, and with it the controversy over saving it. Now, the possibility of building a new one is on the table in Mitchell county.
To build it, nearly $9 million in new debt would have to be issued. Residents are set to discuss this option Tuesday at a public hearing.
General obligation bonds would help cover the approximate $6.5 million cost to build a new structure, with some extra funds set aside for cost over-runs.
Many wanted to save the former courthouse, but that effort failed due to the extreme cost of re-furbishing the 155 year old structure. Much of the duties of the county are now being conducted at 117 Plaza Lane in Osage while the details on a permanent home are worked out.
