10 killed in US drone attacks in Pakistan

By Sajjad Malik –

ISLAMABAD — At least 10 suspected militants were killed Sunday in two U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region along the Afghan border, security officials said.

The first attack killed at least seven and the second killed at least three in the Manna area of North Waziristan, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Two groups with links to al-Qaida, Hafiz Gul Bahadur group and Haqqani network, are active in seven districts in the region. The groups control North Waziristan and are believed to be involved in cross-border raids on NATO forces in Afghanistan. In the first drone strike, four missiles were fired at two vehicles carrying supporters of Bahadur. “Our information shows that seven militants have been killed as two more bodies were pulled out of the charged vehicles,” one official said.

Hours later, two missiles were fired on a compound in a second drone strike, killing at least three suspected Punjabi Taliban members, another security official said.

He said that those killed in the compound strike were Punjabi Taliban. The term is used for rebels from the eastern province of Punjab.

Islamabad’s refusal to take action against the Bahdur and Haqqani militants despite demands from Washington, has prompting the U.S. to step up attacks using CIA-controlled drones in the area.

On Saturday, at least five people were killed when drones targeted a compound in the Shawal area of the district.

“Pakistan has consistently maintained that these attacks are a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and are in contravention of international law,” the Foreign Ministry said in a written statement Saturday.
