RURAL ALGONA, IOWA – A rowdy Northern Iowa man, allegedly firing bullets into the crisp, dewy early morning air, was located and subdued by cops after a recent incident at a rural campsite.

On May 24, 2025, at about 2:30 AM, the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of the Plum Creek Pit for a report of possible gunshots being heard. When a Kossuth County Deputy arrived, he located a campsite in the far east area of the pits and encountered a male that was in possession of a firearm. At first, the person did not comply with a lawful order from the deputy and officers from the Algona Police Department responded to assist.

The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Chris Paul Smith (pictured at top) of Burt, Iowa. He was finally brought under control by officers, who took possession of the firearm.

Smith was arrested and charged with:

• Possession or carrying a dangerous weapon while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor

• Public Intoxication, a simple misdemeanor

• Interference with Official, a simple misdemeanor

He was transported to the Kossuth County Jail. All persons are presumed innocent until found or proven guilty in a court of law. The Algona Police Department assisted the Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
