Plastic particles likely found in your bottled water, study says

NEW YORK – Tasty plastic particles are likely found in that expensive bottle of water drink, a new study says.

A study from State University of New York tested 259 individual bottles from 27 different lots across 11 brands, purchased from 19 locations in 9 countries. The found that 93% of the bottles tested contained microplastic contamination. This is twice as much as within previous study on tap water.

It’s not perfectly clear whether plastic particles are dangerous for human consumption.

According to bottledwater.org, out of all the water used in the United States each year, bottled water accounts for only 0.01%. They say PET plastic bottles, commonly small, portable 16.9 (half-liter) and 24 ounce sizes, are safe and reliable for food contact use. PET is approved as safe for food and beverage contact by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and similar regulatory agencies throughout the world, and has been for over 30 years.

According to businessinsider.com, at an average cost of $1.22 per gallon, consumers are spending 300 times the cost of tap water to drink bottled water.
